If you had dreams of becoming something professional like an accountant, or lawyer, these dreams get thrown out the window. That is unless you can hook up some 4 hours consultancy job that lets you surf for the other hours of the day. Never the less, you career is no longer top priority.
This is no longer a welcome sight
In your previous life, you would have been happy with this beautiful scenery but now when you look more closely, there are no elevated lines in the water. There is no way this ocean is surfable! This view probably means you didn’t read Windguru properly!
When life hands you lemons, you surf!
An article, Scientists froth on surf stoke, was recently published in The Intertia about ions in breaking water increasing endorphins. Whether this is true or not, there is truth in how surfing makes you happy. Whatever problems you have, just take it to the water. IF you manage to catch some waves, everything is fine in the world again, that is until you remember all your problems. But then you realise you just need to go catch more waves.
When life is sweet, you surf!
The best birthday celebration would be to catch some amazing waves and then have a barbecue watching the waves. Your ideal bachelors (if you could get a girl able to adapt to your beach bum lifestyle), would not be to have an average strip club, drunken night out. It would most likely be a group of surfer buddies taking you on the ultimate surfer outing. That last surfer boys road trip you can have before you get married, but of course you would have more of those after anyway, it’s just the thought that counts.
Break a leg!
You have come to terms that you are going to get bashed up and bruised or even bitten by sharks to catch waves. It’s alright, a life without surfing wouldn’t be a life lived at all, so you’ll take your chances as long as you can keep surfing.
Say NO to pampering
Things that seemed necessary before like hot water, a house, shampoo, a job or even a razor, have no longer become essential. You have come to realise that all you need to clean and style yourself is sea water. Any bed near a surfable beach will suffice as a home, be it a caravan, tent or shack. That’s all you need!
This beard is cool
It might be the growing number of hipster surfers, or it could be the lack of pampering, but this beard now looks like a great idea. It could also serve as protection from the cold winds when surfing in sub zero conditions.
You feel a bit lost
It seems as you become an adult all paths lead to working 8 hours of potential surf hours in an a office far away from the beach. You’re not sure how to cope with this as you won’t be able surf and still work 8 hours of the day away. Then you realize there are good waves tomorrow and it’s all alright.
Travelling is a little different
A travel destination no longer exists if it doesn’t have an ocean with swell. Your picture of the world map now has grey areas anywhere that is land locked. Places like Costa Rica and Indonesia can always be a travel destination however many times you have visited them before.
Old cars look cooler
You dream car is no longer a brand new Astin Martin or Ferrari. An old Volkswagen van would be great. Any old car would do that you could convert enough space to fit your surf boards and would look good with all the sea sand that will accumulate in it. Better yet, a car that you would be able to sleep in while waiting for those perfect morning sessions.
The wind is coming
Like an episode of Game of Thrones with Jon Snow uttering “The winter is coming”, you find yourself continually saying phrases like, “The wind is coming” or, “The tide is coming.” Your new life has a lot to do with certain winds and tides. You spend a lot of time researching this and making plans accordingly.
This is how surfer girls look
Whenever you see a surfer girl on your Instagram or surf mag, you see pictures like this. This is how surfer girls look.
You sometimes find yourself in places like this
In your quest to find good waves, you sometimes stumble upon strange and beautiful places you would never have seen had you not been searching for yet another surf experience. Yes, life is about surfing good waves, but you appreciate the journey too.
